Rugged, ancient and breathtaking, the Grampians National Park (Gariwerd) is one of Victoria’s most aweninspiring natural regions. Known for dramatic sandstone peaks, cascading waterfalls, native wildlife and significant Indigenous heritage, it’s a place of both raw beauty and deep story.
Hikes with Spectacular Views
The Grampians are a hiker’s paradise, with trails ranging from easy walks to full-day challenges.
Top hikes:
- The Pinnacle Walk: Iconic panoramic views, accessed from Halls Gap (choose between the short or long route)
- Mount William: Highest peak in the park, accessible by road with a short, steep final climb
- MacKenzie Falls Walk: A well maintained trail leading to one of Victoria’s largest and most powerful waterfalls
Spot Wildlife in the Wild
Kangaroos, wallabies and emus roam freely especially around Halls Gap, the main tourist hub. Look out for koalas in trees along walking tracks and echidnas foraging near bushland paths.
- Reed Lookout & The Balconies: Popular for sunset and birdwatching
- Lake Bellfield: Kayaking, fishing and picnic-friendly
Connect with Indigenous Culture
The Grampians is the traditional land of the Djab Wurrung and Jardwadjali peoples, with over 60,000 years of human history.
- Brambuk Cultural Centre (Halls Gap): Learn about Dreamtime stories, rock art, and bush food
- Bunjil’s Shelter: One of the most significant Aboriginal rock art sites in Victoria
Important: The Park is now co-named Gariwerd, in recognition of Indigenous heritage
