Phillip Island – Penguins, Beaches, and Family Fun

Less than two hours from Melbourne, Phillip Island punches well above its weight as a family friendly destination. With its iconic Penguin Parade, wildlife parks, surf beaches and scenic coastlines, it offers both action and charm a great mix for day trips or weekend getaways.

The Penguin Parade

The island’s star attraction. Every evening, just after sunset, hundreds of little penguins waddle ashore after a day fishing at sea.

  • Best viewed from the Penguin Parade Visitor Centre
  • Choose general seating, underground viewing or guided ranger tours
  • Book in advance it sells out, especially in summer and school holidays

Bring warm clothing, even in summer. The wind off Bass Strait can be icy!

Wildlife Encounters
  • Koala Conservation Reserve – Elevated boardwalks through native bushland, where koalas chill in gum trees
  • Phillip Island Wildlife Park – Feed kangaroos and see a wide range of native animals up close
  • Churchill Island – A historic working farm with highland cattle, wagon rides and gardens
Beaches & Nature
  • Cape Woolamai – Surf beach and clifftop walking track with dramatic views
  • Cowes – The island’s main town with safe swimming beaches, shops and cafés
  • The Nobbies Boardwalk – Seaside platform walk above sea-sprayed rocks and blowholes, with fur seals nearby
Getting There & Staying
  • 2-hour drive from Melbourne (via San Remo bridge)
  • Accommodation ranges from holiday parks and farm stays to modern hotels and cosy B&Bs

Phillip Island is especially good for multi-generational travel easy access, diverse activities, and a pace everyone can enjoy.
