Located in Federation Square, ACMI (formerly known as the Australian Centre for the Moving Image) is Australia’s only national museum dedicated to film, television, video games and digital culture. It’s where stories, screens and interactivity converge and it’s completely free to explore.

  • The Story of the Moving Image – A permanent, hands-on exhibition tracing film and screen culture from shadow puppets to streaming
  • See iconic Australian film artefacts, vintage cameras, and even the original costumes from The Dressmaker and Priscilla
  • Play retro arcade games, build your own animations, and walk through immersive media installations

  • Screen Worlds celebrates video games as part of cultural history
  • Test your skills on Pac-Man, Street Fighter, and Mario Kart
  • Special attention is given to Aussie game creators and animators

 Screenings and Events

  • Cinema 1 and Cinema 2 regularly screen indie films, festivals, retrospectives and documentaries
  • Hosts the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) and Top Screen (VCE Media) annually
