If your brain lights up at the sight of gadgets, rockets, robots or ancient mechanical wonders Scienceworks is your happy place. Located in Spotswood, just across the West Gate Bridge, it’s a museum that brings science, technology and curiosity to life.

 What to Expect

Scienceworks is a favourite for school groups and families, but it’s far from kids only. It’s packed with interactive displays, real world demos, and clever hands-on experiences.

  • Lightning Room – A daily show featuring live high voltage lightning bolts
  • Planetarium – Digital shows about stars, black holes, and the universe, projected on a massive dome
  • Think Ahead – Explore the future of work, cities, and human innovation
  • Sportsworks – Test your reaction time, race against Cathy Freeman, or explore the physics of movement

 Behind the Scenes

  • The building once housed Melbourne’s pumping station, and the old steam machinery is still on display
  • Exhibitions often rotate: past themes have included robotics, health tech, and AI
  • Lots of play zones for toddlers, too it’s well equipped for every age group

Getting There

  • Only 10 minutes from Southern Cross Station via Werribee train line (get off at Spotswood)
  • Driving? There’s a large on site car park
  • Combine with a visit to the nearby Westgate Park or a walk along the Yarra River trail
