Summer is high season for travel in Victoria, and regional areas host some of their most popular events during the warm months. From coastal festivals to country tournaments, here are key summer 2025–26 events in Victoria’s regions (December through February):
Meredith Music Festival (5–7 December 2025)
Kicking off summer, the legendary Meredith Music Festival takes place the first weekend of December at the Meredith Supernatural Amphitheatre (about 90 minutes from Melbourne). This eclectic three day camping festival is renowned for its laid back vibe and “no ickheads” rule. In 2025 it celebrates its 33rd edition. Festival goers can expect a lineup of indie rock, electronic, folk and hip hop artists past Merediths have seen everything from international buzz bands to Aussie cult favorites. With BYO drinks, communal couch viewing (the famous Meredith couch section), and only one stage (so you don’t miss any acts), Meredith is a Victorian summer institution.
Spilt Milk Festival – Ballarat (6 December 2025)
The traveling Spilt Milk music festival returns to Victoria Park in Ballarat on 6 Dec 2025. Spilt Milk brings a day of cutting edge pop, electronic and indie music, along with art installations and gourmet food trucks. Ballarat will host big name headline artists (previous editions have featured ARIA award winners and Triple J favorites) plus plenty of up and coming acts. This one day festival draws young music fans from 025, so tickets are hot property.
Falls Music & Arts Festival / Beyond The Valley (NYE 2025)
New Year’s Eve in regional Victoria means camping festivals. Falls Festival, traditionally held over New Year at Lorne, has been on hiatus recently, but if it returns for 2025–26 it will attract thousands for a multi day music and arts extravaganza. Alternatively, Beyond The Valley has become a major NYE festival it’s set for 28 Dec 2025 1 Jan 2026 at Barunah Plains in western Victoria. BTV offers four days of electronic, dance and hip hop music with a boutique camping experience. Festival goers ring in the New Year under the stars to international DJ sets and spectacular stage productions. These events are 18+ and tickets sell out fast, as young people flock to celebrate the New Year festival style.
Festival of Sails (24–26 January 2026, Geelong)
Each year over the Australia Day long weekend, Geelong hosts the Festival of Sails Australia’s biggest keelboat regatta combined with a waterfront festival. In 2026 the Festival runs 24–26 Jan. Over 300 yachts will race on Corio Bay, while on shore the Royal Geelong Yacht Club presents live music, gourmet food stalls, markets and entertainment for all ages. Entry to the festival precinct is free. It’s a fantastic time to visit Geelong: you can watch sailing action by day and enjoy performances and fireworks by night. The event highlights Geelong’s beautiful bay and thriving food scene, drawing both boating enthusiasts and general visitors during the peak of summer.
Sports Events – Country Racing & Surfing
Summer is prime time for sports in regional Victoria. The country horse racing circuit features events like the Jericho Cup (Warrnambool, late Dec) and a host of picnic race meetings around New Year’s. Many racecourses (e.g. at Dederang or Woolamai) hold relaxed summer race days that are a fun local day out. On the coast, surfing competitions make a splash while the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach is Easter (autumn), summer sees junior surf carnivals and the massive Lorne Pier to Pub ocean swim (one of the world’s largest open water swims, held in early January). Visitors can either participate or cheer from the beach in these quintessentially Aussie summer sporting events.
