Victoria’s got wine country, beaches and national parks but it’s also home to some seriously weird, whimsical, and WTF locations. If you’re into the offbeat, check out these truly strange spots scattered across the state.
Cow Up a Tree – Docklands
Yes, a literal sculpture of a cow stuck in a tree. It’s an artwork by John Kelly symbolising absurdity and bureaucracy. Visitors either love it or scratch their heads.
Luna Park’s Laughing Mouth – St Kilda
Open since 1912, Melbourne’s seaside theme park is iconic but walking into a giant clown face still freaks out first-timers.
The Big Woolbales – Hamilton
It’s the sheep capital of Australia, so naturally there’s a massive stack of sculpted woolbales outside town. Quirky? Yes. Photo-worthy? Also yes.
Wunderkammer – CBD
A shop-meets-museum of taxidermy, fossils, surgical tools and all things odd. You’ll find a Victorian glass eye next to a meteorite all for sale.
Shell Museum – Lakes Entrance
This coastal museum has thousands of shells including glow-in-the-dark varieties, sea monster myths, and an oddly hypnotic vibe. Retro but weirdly charming.
Aradale Asylum – Ararat
A defunct psychiatric hospital with over 60 buildings, ghost tours, and tales of haunting. It’s spooky, strange and a huge piece of gold rush history.
Poowong
Just the name. It’s a real town, in Gippsland. And yes locals are used to the jokes.
If you’ve done the tourist trail, these spots show you a side of Victoria that’s just a little bit weirder and a lot more memorable.
