Victoria isn’t just full of good food and liveable cities it’s also where some of Australia’s most impressive inventions were born. From life-saving devices to game-changing tech, these ideas started right here.
1. The Black Box Flight Recorder
Created in the 1950s by Dr David Warren at the Aeronautical Research Laboratory in Melbourne, the Black Box has become standard in every commercial aircraft worldwide.
2. The Bionic Ear
In the 1970s, Professor Graeme Clark led a team at Melbourne University to develop the first cochlear implant, helping thousands regain hearing.
3. The Electronic Pacemaker (Prototype)
In 1926, Dr Mark Lidwill from Melbourne developed the first device to control heart rhythm electronically a precursor to the modern pacemaker.
4. The Flat White (Sort Of)
While there’s long debate with Sydney, Melbourne baristas helped turn the flat white into a cultural export especially during the third wave coffee movement.
5. Multi-Channel TV
Melbourne’s GTV9 and HSV7 were pioneers in introducing multi-channel broadcasting and sports programming in the 1960s–70s that shaped Australian media.
6. Polywaffle Chocolate Bar
A sweet oddity invented by Hoadley’s Chocolates in South Melbourne discontinued in 2009, but making a nostalgic comeback.
Innovation is woven into the state’s DNA with local universities and hospitals continuing to lead in biotech, robotics, and clean energy solutions.
